The suspects were identified as Ratan Sublaxmaiya Sanktala (23), a resident of Elphistine road, and Prashant Nandkumar Permal (25) from Ramnagar in Bopkhel Gaon near Khadki. The arrests were made by a team of Police Inspector Manohar Joshi and Police Constables Mahesh Nimbalkar, Krishnakant Desai and Rajkumar Patil.
Sanktala was taken into custody while he was handling work at the ammunition factory canteen while Permal was arrested later from the Fergusson College Road area based on the information provided by the main suspect.
Sanktala earlier worked as a car driver on contract basis with the Sai Service station on Jangli Maharaj Road for three months, but quit the job eight months ago. Permal used to work as a security person with Religare on FC Road. "Sanktala and Permal planned to steal a car from the stockyard as the ignition keys used to be kept inside the cars. Accordingly, Ratan went to the parking area in the wee hours of May 16. Taking advantage of power cut, he managed to flee with the car as the security guard was away," Nimbalkar said. "Sanktala was trying to sell off the stolen car. During this period we got a tip-off and arrested both the suspects."
