The city police rescued a 17-year-old college student who was kidnapped by a gang of four from near her house in Sheshadripuram yesterday night. The police have also arrested the man who allegedly masterminded the kidnap and thwarted the payment of ransom of Rs 1 crore.
The accused, Karthik and his associates allegedly kidnapped Bhavi Mehta, daughter of industrialist Sanjay Mehta, while she was going to the college at 11.00 am on Friday.
The kidnappers later telephoned Sanjay Mehta and demanded Rs. 1 crore for the safe release of the captive. They warned that if the police were alerted or they suspected any foul play, they would murder the hostage. They directed that the ransom be brought near the Food World outlet in Vijaynagar, according to the sources.
However, Sanjay Mehta alerted the police. Following this, the police formed a special team, which tracked down the culprit and rescued the victim. The police are on the look out for seven others, who fled from the scene after their leader Karthik was nabbed.
