MiD DAY brings you this season's choicest gaalis from Karnataka's top politicians. (And you thought Varun Gandhi and Narendra Modi were the experts!)

Varun Gandhi and Narendra Modi may have made a national spectacle of themselves with their colourful profanities, but Karnataka's politicians have quietly upstaged them when no one was looking their way.

MiD DAY brings you a choice of gaalis from some of the state's most famous politicians. These were delivered in Kannada, but we bring you a close approximation. Warning: Some of the spice may be lost in translation.

Kagodu Thimmappa, former Congress minister (in response to Varun's famous gaali): "I will cut off the hands of those who scream about Hindutva."

M P Renukacharya, BJP MLA (countering Kagodu Thimmappa):
"I will chop off the heads of those who speak against Hindus."

H D Kumaraswamy, former chief minister and JDS candidate:
"The Vokkaliga trinity of Chandre Gowda, Shivrame Gowda and Srikantaiyya, who defected to the BJP, are old bullocks walking to the slaughterhouse."

B S Yeddyurappa, chief minister:
JDS candidates are sheep

H D Deve Gowda, former prime minister and JDS boss:
JDS candidates will become rams and kick the private parts of those who trouble them

Umesh Katti, horticulture minister in the BJP government:
"Deve Gowda should be sent to a slaughterhouse because he is the oldest bullock." (Gowda is 77).

C T Ravi, BJP MLA:
"Even before people can raise their weapons to cut off the hands of Hindutva supporters, we will perform their tithi.' (Tithi is a ritual conducted after death).

K S Eshwarappa, Karnataka energy minister:
"If Bangarappa talks ill of the Ramchandrapura mutt, I will cut off his tongue."

Janardhan Reddy, tourism minister in BJP government:
"Kumaraswamy is a pucca thief."

D V Sadananda Gowda, BJP state president:
"Congress candidates are so old they can't even tie up their dhotis if they fall off."

K Diwakar, chief minister Yeddyurappa's legal advisor :
"Bloody officer! He has no common sense. He is giving complaints as if he is handing out Congress handbills".
(Fuming against the Shimoga election officer who filed a complaint against Yeddyurappa for making assurances at a Tamil conference)
