A 28-year-old woman died on Thursday morning when a careless private bus driver in Andheri crushed her under its wheels and sped away. What was even more shocking was that neither did any passer-by offer any immediate help to her nor note the bus number.
Thane resident Preeti Kamble, working as an assistant manager in a company at Chakala, was knocked down by a bus on Andheri-Kurla road.
She is survived by her old parents and an elder brother. Kamble's father Sudhakar (63) is a retired man, while her brother Prashant works with BMC.
A police official from Andheri police station said, "Preeti and Prashant were the only working members in the family and daily Preeti used to board a bus to Chakala at 7.20 am from Thane and visit the Holy Family church before going to office. On Thursday morning, after visiting the church, Preeti was crossing the road when a private bus crushed her under its wheels at 8.30 am. The bus couldn't be identified as the driver sped away after hitting the girl."
A hit-and-run accident case has been registered in Andheri East police station under section 279 (rash driving) and 304(a) [causing death by negligence] of the Indian Penal Code.
Police inspector Prabhakar Kamble, Andheri East police station, said, "We haven't caught anyone till now and our investigations are on to search the bus and its driver."
Father Adolf, Holy Family Church went to the accident spot just after the accident took place. Speaking to MiD DAY he said, "There was a huge chaos there and when I reached the spot I saw that the girl's head was crushed badly and she was lying in a pool of blood. We tried calling the police on 100 but we couldn't reach the police, but later somehow we informed the police and also arranged for an ambulance."
He also complained about traffic in the area and demanded a zebra crossing for pedestrians.
Speaking to MiD DAY Senior Police Inspector (Traffic, Airport) VH Dhatrak said "We are aware about the incident as our constable was present at the accident spot."u00a0
