Three days of protests by almost 3,000 students and their parents outside NMKRV College, against corruption in the allotment of postgraduate seats in medical colleges of the state during councelling sessions, finally came to an end yesterday. However, students and parents are wondering if guilty will ever be charged.
High hopes: Candidates attend COMED-K counselling that commenced
for post graduates medical seats at NMKRV College yesterday.
The counseling was cancelled on Tuesday following protests.
MiD DAY contacted students to find out what they think is going on behind those closed counselling doors?
Nischal Raj, a student claimed, "Blocking seats is rampant in the ComedK and what is surprising is that the authorities themselves are the ringmasters! The seats are sold out to the candidates rather than being allotted as per merit. And this is done through hawk eyed 'agents' who identify such students and lure them to pay around Rs 5 lakhs to secure a seat. And these agents are backed by the ComedK management itself."
A parent Jagadish D, alleged, "There is a huge demand for subjects like Medicine, Orthopedic and Pediatrics. But the management keep majority of the seats for themselves. According to government directions, ComedK is allowed to allot only 42 per cent of seats for themselves. But they took all the good seats, leaving only about 2 per cent seats for meritious students. Our children work so hard to get into a good course and this is what they are subjected to!"
Although the Medical Director, Dr Aruna came down to NMKRV College to address the problem, there was little that came out of it. When Mid Day tried to contact the medical education office, the authorities refused to comment claiming that there was no problem at all.
