Pune: All members of a family that was on their way back from an engagement ceremony were killed oin Sunday night after the autorickshaw they were travelling in, turned turtle. The police have registered a case against the driver.
The incident took place late yesterday night in Kondhwa, Pune. According to the police, Sharif Ibrahim Khan (64), his wife Famida (61) and sister Zahira Zahir Qureshi (65) - all residents of Kondhwa - were on their way home after attending an engagement ceremony of a relative. Khan and his family hailed an autorickshaw home.
The police said that the driver, Momeen Babulal Shaikh (22), switched to neutral gear on encountering a slope. While riding downwards, the auto lost control, rammed into a nearby house and turned upside down.
Khan and his wife died on the spot. Qureshi was rushed to Sassoon General Hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
Shaikh, who jumped out of the vehicle before it hit the house, is currently undergoing treatment at a local hospital.
He has been charged under Section 304-A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for causing death due to negligence and under relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.
