The new eateries, to be operational next month, are part of a series of changes to make the airport more passenger-friendly

For those who have passed by the Lohegaon airport and wondered what the ongoing renovation and development work is all about, there is good news - as part of a major facelift, Pune International Airport will soon get four new restaurants.

While in the past the airport has often received flak for the lack of facilities, a series of changes are being made so that passengers can begin to see it as an airport of international standards.

The development work at the airport includes a new building on the old parking lot, which will house two new restaurants. The restaurants will be open to passengers, visitors who come to see family and friends off, as well as citizens who are looking to dine out.

"Looking at the increasing number of passengers at the airport, as well as visitors who come to receive their relatives and friends, we are attempting to provide more variety in the food department," said airport director Manoj Gangal. "We are also planning to keep the restaurants open for citizens so they can spend quality time there with their family," he added.

Two more eateries will be set up at the check-in area inside the main building, for the convenience of passengers waiting for departure flights. The restaurants are likely to be functional by mid-September, said Gangal. Currently, the airport has few options for passengers and visitors looking to enjoy a nice meal there.

A popular fast food joint close to the airport gates shut down recently, leaving only the airport canteen for visitors waiting for arriving passengers. Inside, five snack bars, a fast food outlet and a food lounge is all that the airport has to offer passengers. "The two new snack bars inside the airport premises will have north and south Indian food, along with other regional cuisines," said Gangal.
