Couple making out in car mistaken for thieves by villagers; man in four-wheeler assaulted
Making out in a car in the vicinity of a village near the city proved costly for a couple as their act was disrupted by locals who mistook them for thieves and assaulted the man in the vehicle.
The strange drama unfolded on Saturday afternoon at a village close to Rajgurunagar-Khed, some 40 km from the city.
The thrashed man, Rohan (23), was in for more trouble when the father of the woman with him, Asha (19), filed a complaint of kidnapping with the police. The complaint was later withdrawn when Asha confessed to having gone on a date with her Rohan.
Disturbed in the act: Couple in a car was mistaken
for dacoits by villagers.
The incident
In the backdrop of a growing number of dacoity cases in rural areas, the villagers were on high alert. A child informed some of them that a suspicious car was parked on the road. Soon a mob was headed towards the car.
Frightened at the sight, the Rohan and Asha decided to flee in the car. They drove the vehicle towards Rajgurunagar, and the villagers gave chase.
The chase went on for an hour, finally ending when the car was intercepted by the police near Avsari phata. Here, Rohan was assaulted by the villagers, but the police managed to escort the couple to the Rajgurunar-Khed police station.
At the police station, the young woman confessed to having been on a date with Rohan, who was mistaken for a thief and her kidnapper.
Police Inspector S.S More from Rajgurunagar police station said, "After the girl's father informed us that his daughter was kidnapped by an unknown person in his car, we broadcast the information over wireless sets.
The couple was intercepted at Avasari phata. It so happened that when they were in the car, there was huge commotion around them and people started coming towards them, mistaking them for thieves. Asha could not come out of the car to explain this to locals, who came charging towards them."
The officer said they had recorded the Rohan's and Asha's statements. He added that the kidnap complaint was withdrawn after the Asha told her parents that Rohan was known to her and she was in his car of her own will.
