Nothing found against them, 3 Italians picked up from Pune, Mumbai leave country

THE Delhi police will have to look for fresh leads in the Radisson Hotel ammunition recovery case as nothing incriminating was found against the three Italian guests traced to the city and Mumbai and picked up in a hush-hush operation last week.

False scent? Two of the Italians and two Indians at Pune's Shivajinagar
police station on Thursday

Flown to Delhi in connection with the case, the Italians were allowed to leave the same day by investigating officers, said a senior official attached to the Special Branch of the Delhi police.
The officer said a thorough probe into their affairs could establish no link between them and the ammunition found under the bed of an empty room in the Delhi hotel.

The three, Giulio Ponetto, Giovanni Ceccomello, Donato Dngello, even left India on Monday, said another official of the Delhi police Special Branch.
On May 24, the Delhi police had recovered 24 live cartridges and two blank magazines from Room No. 448 of the Radisson.

No firearms
"Unlike earlier reports suggesting the recovery of two pistols, we only recovered 24 live cartridges and two blank magazines from the hotel room," said an official, requesting anonymity. On May 24, the three Italians had stayed at the hotel. Picture grabs from the baggage scanning machine at the Delhi hotel showed suspicious material in a laptop bag they were carrying and the police wasted no time in issuing a look-out notice.

Two Indians had also been picked up with the Italians and detained at the Shivajinagar police station in connection with the case.

"The Indians who were detained in Pune were rounded up for inquiry as they were occupying the rooms at Hotel Pride booked by the same company the Italians work with," said the official. "They were let off in Pune itself."

Stealth operation
The Italians and the Indians had been picked up in the dead of the night after information had been conveyed by the Delhi police.
A Delhi police team first arrived in Mumbai ato take custody of Giulio Ponetto. The same day they flew him and the two detained Italians, Giovanni Ceccomello, Donato Dngello, to Delhi. The police said Ponetto was in Mumbai as he had not returned to the city from a visit there with the other two Italians; Ceccomello and Dngello returned at 11 pm to their hotel.
