With foreign embassies issuing advisories on imminent militant attacks at busy market places and crowded areas in Delhi, a train of thought led us to the capital's soft-targets-the railway stations.
MiD DAY visited the Hazrat Nizamuddin Station, the Old Delhi Railway Station and the New Delhi Railway Station on Sunday and discovered several loopholes in the security set-up.

The Door Frame Metal Detector (DFMD) at the main entrance was not working. On top of that, the police personnel didn't even have Hand Held Metal Detectors (HHMD) to frisk passengers.

When asked about the situation, a police officer deployed at the station said, "The DFMD had developed some snag today and we have called the mechanic to repair it but it can only become functional tomorrow, today being a Sunday." Meanwhile sources said the DFMD had been out of order the past two days.
Moreover, one of the CCTV cameras, out of the 20 installed inside the station premises, wasn't working, but the police official denied this.u00a0u00a0

The scene here was not very different. Though, the DFMD installed at one of the entrances was working, another one was out of order, and seemed to be the preferred choice of most commuters.
"We ask them to not to cross from the old one but some passengers still use the non-functional DFMD," said a police officer. However, the police officials said that all the CCTV cameras were working well and there were no complaints of any technical snags.

At the New Delhi Railway station, everything seemed to be in order and there were no technical glitches or any problems with the DFMD and the CCTV cameras.
But at Gate number 1, the passengers were seen entering the premises through the gaps beside the DFMD.
"We have asked the passengers to enter the railway station through the DFMD but they don't listen. While we are busy with checking some of them manage to cross through the open space," said a police officer.
