The Railways on Friday informed Parliament that it has no plans to open 'Jan Aushadhi Kendras', stores selling medicines at affordable prices, at stations. The Railways' assertion came months after it stated that it had in principle agreed to set up such stores. Minister of State for Railway Rajen Gohain replied in the negative when asked in Rajya Sabha today whether the government was planning to open Jan Aushadhi Kendras at railway stations.
However, in his reply to a similar question in the Rajya Sabha on July 21 last year, Gohain had given a detailed account of the collaboration with the chemical and fertiliser ministry over opening of such stores on stations. 'Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana' is a campaign by the Department of Pharmaceuticals, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers, to provide quality medicines at affordable prices to the masses through special stores named 'Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Kendras'.
In his July 21 reply, Gohain had said that the "two ministries have, in principle, agreed to set up such kendras at railway premises. Deliberations between the two ministries to work out the modalities, are going on."
