Two people who kidnapped a farmer in the drought-hit Marathwada region of Maharashtra demanded food as ransom to free the man

A farmer in the drought-hit Marathwada region of the state was kidnapped by two people, apparently for food, a police official said in Mumbai today.

Sudam Suradkar was on his way towards his farm in Sillod tehsil of the district yesterday, when he was waylaid by two people, Aurangabad Superintendent of Police (Rural) Navinchandra Reddy said

The duo snatched his lunch box and later called his family members, demanding more food to satiate their hunger, he added. They threatened that Suradkar would be freed only if a bigger tiffin is sent. However, Suradkar managed to flee from his captors, the police official said.

"On receiving information Policemen from Ajintha police station went to the spot. So far, no villager has come forward to claim that such an incident has occurred," Reddy said.
