Readers point out more roads which are falling apart

MiD DAY's report on the city's worst paved roads in the city had prompted hundreds of readers to write, tweet and email about stretches near their homes and offices that also deserve a place on that list

MiD DAY reporters went to each of the spots to see for themselves - and they couldn't agree more with their readers.

Location
Dukes Road from Eastern Freeway towards Govandi
Condition: This interior road connects Chembur and Govandi, and is used by many motorists and heavy vehicles. The stretch of the road near the Dukes factory is in bad shape, thanks to paver blocks.

Paver blocks are not a solution because they keep coming out. BMC's repair work is of no use as the roads return to being broken and scarred after each repair. The BMC should avoid using paver blocks.

Location
Road near Panjarpoleu00a0end of Eastern freeway
Condition: The road that leads to CST and the main turning to the Eastern Freeway from Deonar has a huge stretch of dismantled pavers. The stretch is always packed with commuters who use the road as it directly connects to the freeway.

The paver blocks have given way to large potholes, and many people fall because of it. Weu00a0have complained to BMC, and warned them of accidents, but they don't do anything.

Location
New link Road, Malad
Condition: There is a long uneven stretch on the all-important southbound arm of the New Link Road opposite Inorbit Mall in Malad, which gives commuters a harrowing time.

Abdul Quyyum,
Auto rickshaw driver

This uneven road creates problems for auto rickshaw drivers and passengers alike. Many times, commuters complain of backaches due to bumpiness of the road. I am 60-years-old now and it is getting difficult for me to continue driving the vehicle and earn my livelihood.

Location
Pratiksha Nagar, Sion
Condition: It's the familiar problem of dislodged paver blocks giving rise to unevenness and bumpiness on this stretch, with commuters having to manoeuvre their way around these rocky patches. One of the roads that connect to GTB station and Sion is heavily pockmarked .

I don't know why the civic body allows the use of paver blocks. These paver blocks actually hinder our movement, instead of helping us.

Location
Andheri-Chakala Road
Condition: This is an important road connecting WEH to Chakala, Marol and Powai. Many motorists going to these areas use this road on a daily basis, but due to a 50 m-long patch of unevenness, traffic gets slower, leading to traffic jams. This is a commercial area and is always packed with motorists and commuters, all of whom have a harrowing time.

Ashish Adarkar,
Frequent commuter

I am well aware of the pathetic condition of this road and so try to avoid it as often as possible. But it is not always feasible and travelling becomes terrible. The condition deteriorates during monsoon, causing many commuters to skid.

Official speak
When I joined two months ago, I took the decision of avoiding paver blocks on major and minor roads as much as possible, as even I understand they do not serve the need. We would be using them on the footpaths mostly.

Paver blocks are not suitable when placed on roads with heavy traffic, but there will be some roads - such as those with issues like waterlogging - where we would prefer pavers. - SVR Srinivas, Additional Municipal Commissioner
