Renowned Hindi poet Kailash Vajpeyi died in the wee hours today following a cardiac arrest at a city hospital here. 79-year-old Vajpeyi was rushed to a private hospital in Saket last night after his health deteriorated


New Delhi: Renowned Hindi poet Kailash Vajpeyi died in the wee hours today following a cardiac arrest at a city hospital here. 79-year-old Vajpeyi was rushed to a private hospital in Saket last night after his health deteriorated.

He breathed his last at around 3 AM, according to family. Vajpeyi is survived by his wife and daughter Ananya Vajpeyi. He was later cremated at Lodhi crematorium in the afternoon in presence of members of literary and political fraternity including Mani Shankar Aiyar, Ashis Nandy, Kapila Vatsyayan, and Srinivasarao.

Vajpeyi was awarded with Sahitya Akademi award in 2009 for his work 'Hawa mein hastakshar' (Signature in the air). He also received the 'Vachaspati' title from Lucknow University. Born in 1936 at Hamirpur of Uttar Pradesh, he has published over 28 books, including 14 volumes of poetry.

His works include renowned titles such as 'Sufinama', 'Sankrant' apart from essays that also have been translated in English, Spanish and German. His death was condoled by Sahitya Akademi President Vishwanath Prasad Tiwari.
