It would have been just another case of an attempted bank robbery if the robbers hadn't returned to the crime scene to collect their motorcycles. They came to fetch their bikes and were trapped by the police. In a bid to escape, they shot at three people, including two cops, and were finally arrested.
The police said four men in their mid-20su00a0Ishtiyak, Majid, Ahmed Sayeed and Kiranpalu00a0drove to the Central Bank, Krishna Market, in Kalkaji on a black Pulsar and a Discover bike at around 1.35 pm. While Ishityak and Majid went inside the bank, the other two stood guard outside. Ishityak put a gun to the head of PC Baruah, the bank manager, and asked him to hand over all the cash. "He came into my cabin, pulled out a gun from his sock and put it to my head. However, an elderly customer overpowered him," said Baruah.
Baruah said that 75-year-old MK Kapoor, a resident of Kalkaji, caught Ishtiyak and held on to him while other customers called the police. In the commotion Ishtiyak managed to free himself. The other three also fled the scene.
However, after two hours, Majid and Ishtiyak returned to collect their bikes parked outside the bank. They were arrested by the police, but not before shooting at three men.
"We realised that the robbers had left their motorcycles behind while fleeing. We identified the vehicles and kept a watch. At around 4 pm, two suspicious looking persons tried to drive away the bikes. As a police party approached them, they started firing in which three persons including two copsu00a0Head Constable Ashok Kumar and Constable Vikramu00a0were shot at. Tea kiosk owner Raj Kumar was also injured. The robbers were arrested after a short exchange of fire," said a police official.
Ishtiyak was held from near the Kalkaji temple.
