The five robbers were besotted with south Delhi's plush houses, but only to set them on fire. In the last six months the gang robbed around 15 houses and set at least seven of them on fire. The robbers have been arrested by the crime branch of the Delhi Police.u00a0

The arrested have been identified as Sanjay, 26, Vishwajeet Bishwas, 22, Mahinder, 20, Ratan, 21 and the receiver of stolen goods Narender Singh, 48.

Acting on a tip-off about a huge haul of stolen goods being stocked at Harkesh Nagar in south Delhi, the police raided the house, where the men were arrested.


According to the police, the gang targeted houses in south Delhi, especially those in the vicinity of Kidwai Nagar, Sarojini Nagar, R K Puram and Kotla Mubarakpur, as they were familiar with the area.

Neeraj Thakur, additional commissioner of police (Crime) said, "They used to enter a house by cutting the iron grill of windows, preferably on the back side. Five men, committed burglaries and later set houses on fire hoping that it will erase evidence. They also thought that the dog squad would not be able to track them later," he said.

The police also recovered eight laptops, one Handycam, two mobile phones, four imported watches, a CD player, one telescopic engineering instrument from their possession. Besides, a huge amount of gold and silver jewellery was also found at the place.

November 7, 2009:
They committed burglary of Handycam, silver coins, silver jewellery, watches & other articles from House No A-333, East Kidwai Nagar. After committing the burglary, they set the house on fire.
August 11, 2009: Committed burglary of cash, jewellery & other articles from House No 1188, Laxmi Bai Nagar. After committing burglary, they set the house on fire.
