Karol Bagh and Paharganj to get facelifts ahead of Games
Next year's Commonwealth Games will not only clean up the neighbourhoods in east Delhi where most of the events will be held, it is expected to give a makeover to Delhi's budget tourist hubs Paharganj and Karol Bagh as well.
Tourism Minister Kumari Selja said on Wednesday the transport ministry has already allocated Rs 44 crore for Paharganj and Rs 33 crore for Karol Bagh to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).
Many backpackers from abroad prefer to stay in these two areas because of the affordable accommodation they offer besides their central location.
"Under this scheme, the MCD will take care of the roads and surrounding areas in these two localities," Selja said.
The minister said her ministry has given the MCD Rs 11 crore for building two parking bays and other civic amenities in these two areas.
"A Singapore -style stack car parking will come up in Paharganj before the Commonwealth Games," she said.
In this hydraulic stack parking system, cars can be moved vertically or horizontally with powerful hydraulic lifts.
These will be multi-level parking lots.
