Marriage is brisk business for this man, who went on a spree tying the knot - band, baaja, baarat and all - and making a killing at it. The Bangur Nagar police have arrested a self-proclaimed IT professional for cheating several women of property and valuables after marrying them.u00a0
The accused, Amit Nachankar (33), a resident of Dahisar, got hitched at least thrice, and recently gave out an ad in a regional newspaper, inviting a suitable alliance. His father has also been arrested for being party to the crime.u00a0Nachankar was exposed last Wednesday, days after one of his wives/victims Reshma Mane (name changed) approached the Bharatiya Stree Shakti NGO with her tale of deception.

Majula Nair, a counsellor with the NGO, said, "We received a complaint from Reshma, a BPO employee, that her husband had cheated her by claiming it was his first marriage. Reshma who got married in February, 2011 told us that she was approached by one Salma Patel, who revealed to her that Nachankar married her in June later that year." After making preliminary inquiries, the NGO workers found out that before marrying Reshma and Salma, Nachankar had married another woman in Yavatmal six years ago, who bore him a daughter now four years of age. Nachankar's father Deepak would accompany him to fix the nuptials.

Reshma said, "He (Nachankar) had given an advertisement in the matrimonial section, following which we met. After our marriage, Nachankar told me that his father was upset with his decision and was refusing to allow us in the house. So we began staying in a hotel. After a few days, he convinced me to transfer my property to him. He also took away all my ornaments." Reshma said the accused assured her that by transferring the property he would be able to impress his father. He then promised that once his father allowed them to stay with him, he would transfer all the property back in Reshma's name."
With this information, the NGO workers approached the Bangur Nagar police and registered a complaint against Nachankar on the charges of dowry and cheating. The father and son duo was produced before the metropolitan magistrate court in Andheri on Wednesday, and remanded in police custody till April 21.
Following investigations, police officials discovered that the accused had recently given a matrimonial ad on a website. Senior Inspector Ramesh Kadam said, "So far, it has been ascertained that the accused had cheated three women. Investigations are on to get leads on whether he had cheated more women."u00a0
