Rishta meetings, mother-in-law requirements, cooking, cleaning, preening, trailing ghoonghats and annoyingly shy brides are what the slew of marriage shows on air revolve around; enough to put anyone off the institution

Rishta meetings, mother-in-law requirements, cooking, cleaning, preening, trailing ghoonghats and annoyingly shy brides are what the slew of marriage shows on air revolve around; enough to put anyone off the institution.

Ragini Khanna plays the 'spoilt' bahu in Sasuraal Genda Phool

Take, for instance, this teaser for Toh Baat Humaari Pakki Hai on Sony TV. A fair, pretty, obedient girl in pigtails is trained in the kitchen by mum Mona Ambegaonkar. Later, her pigtails loosen, she dons a sparkly sari and proceeds for a 'bride showcase' with a tray of chai. "Chalo, ladka dekhte hain," chides the sister, when grandmum Himani Shivpuri righteously corrects, "Nahin, ladki dikhaane!"

If that's not enough, there's Saathiya on Star Plus, with 'modern' girl riding a scooty and 'traditional' girl playing with dolls, telling us whom they'd like to marry.

The marriage-and-everything-leading-to-it movement began with Rajan Shahi's Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlaata Hai, two years ago, but is picking up momentum now.

Pheras that stand out
Do Saheliyan Kismat ki Katputliyan: the promos and radio spots for this tearjerker are hilarious (see pic). Two BFFs stare morosely at you from hoardings at Dadar station. Why the glum faces? They got married to each other's fianc ufffds. A moment to recover, please.

Sasuraal Genda Phool: spoilt 'modern and immature' girl takes her pheras with an uncool guy and loving but traditional family. Like we said, enough to put anyone off marriage.
