What is common between Bangalore-based paper artists Hamsini Hariharan and Master Oogway, the very wise old tortoise from the flick Kung Fu Panda? Both believe in the philosophy: "Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift." And that's exactly how the 21-year-old Hamsini introduces herself to us. For this self-taught designer does not come from an academic designer background and lets her work as a paper artist do the talking rather than her academic credentials.

Under her label Monkey Paperie, Hamsini makes wedding invitations, wedding decor, stationery, gift tags, wrapping paper, jewellery holders, paper weights, pen-stands, torans, table-center pieces and anything else that catches her fancy in bright yellows, reds, pinks and fluorescent greens among others. Most of her products are bespoke and customised according to the whims and needs of the client.
The name monkey papery came about when one day Hamsini was brainstorming with her friends for a quirky prefix to the word "papery" when she stumbled upon the word monkey. "I've always been working with paper in some form or the other. I am a huge fan of hand-made stationery," says Hamsini. Whether it is brightly hued floral crepe pompoms that you can hang in your garden, balcony or even to brighten up your room with some fairy lights to gift tags stamped with traditional motifs or done up with bits of broken bangles, you will find touches of festivals, seasons, colours and other design elements in Hamsini's works.
While talking about her favourite medium paper, Hamsini, who works with handmade and recycled paper, says, "The thing about paper is that it can be used anywhere - office, home or open spaces. It is multi dimensional. Therein lies the fun of working with paper." She also bursts the myth that paper is flimsy and not long lasting. "Well actually contrary to popular notion, paper is very sturdy.
There are certain forms of paper available that are strong and stiff," she says. Hamsini also designs customised invites and other stationary related to weddings such as thank you cards and other itinerary related invites. And the good news is that Monkey Paperie is willing to send across these paper products all across India.
