Culprits decamp with silver crowns of idols and other ornaments worth Rs 8 lakh

The priest of Jain Temple in Shirur was in for a shock yesterday when he entered the temple premises to perform pooja. The main door of the temple was broken and silver crowns on the idols of Vasupujya Swami, Aadeshwar Awami and Mahaveer Swami, besides other ornaments, were missing.

Police Inspector Ashok Kshirsagar from Shirur police station, said, "Unidentified suspects looted the temple around 5 am and decamped with silver ornaments weighing 20 kg. The thieves also tried to break into the donation box but were unsuccessful." The looted valuables are estimated to be worth Rs 8 lakh.

As the theft came to light, fingerprint experts and a dog squad were brought in to aid investigations. "Three security guards were on duty during those crucial hours and they have been detained for interrogation. They are Ashok Pawar, Sunil Kale and Nana Pawar," Kshirsagar said.
