The debate over photography being an art or science is as old as the first camera. But for the Photographic Society of Pune, there is no doubt that it is an art. Sunil Kapadia (52), founder-member and president, said, "We started the group in 2001 with the aim of getting people to see photography as an art form."
Eventful
Kapadia said they initially focused on teaching photography. "Our first event was a slide show. The response was good, and around 30 people joined us immediately," he added.
Once the group took off, they began organising more activities, including exhibitions. "Last week, we burst crackers, so participants can learn the intricacies of shooting them," said Kapadia.
The group celebrates its anniversary between August 12 and 19. However, this year, the celebrations have been postponed due to the swine flu scare to December 10 to 13 with an exhibition of photographs of birds.
The eight-year-old group has more than 100 members. Jignesh Mistry (21), a member said, "I have learnt a lot here and feel I can compete at an international level now." Said Manasi Raautt (22), who plans to pursue photography professionally, "The members are really helpful and helped me master the technique of photography."
