Residents of Balaji Nagar got a rude shock when the stray dogs they had grown fond of in their colony began dropping dead in quick succession late last night.
Residents Yaman Chhaya and Ketan Lakhani were going out for dinner on their bike at 9 pm when a person rushed to them and said: "Something has happened to the dogs ufffd they are dying."
They rushed to the spot, Shivanjali Mitra Mandal Chowk, to see five of the eight strays there collapsed on the ground and fighting for their breath. By the time they called a vet, four had died.
Dr Prashant, the vet, said, "I have given antidotes. I can only say it's a case of poisoning, the details will emerge only after examination of the viscera. Two dogs were saved, but are still unconscious. One dog got away and is alive."
Bystanders were still at the spot at 11.30 pm. N G Jagde, who runs Govind Mess,u00a0 said, "It happened in front of myu00a0 shop. Someone came to feed something to the dogs. We did not see his face. After that the dogs started dying."
