Robbers plastered techie's nose instead of mouth
Umesh, 27, a newly-married Infosys (BPO) employee, died of asphyxiation after robbers who barged into his house plastered his nose by mistake.
Umesh, a native of Erode in Tamil Nadu who got married six months ago, was woken up around 5.30 am after hearing the doorbell ring repeatedly at his flat in Ramaswamy Palya in Banasawadi.
When he opened the door, a group of four barged into the house and gagged and bound him. They later dragged Umesh to the bedroom and tied him to the cot.
The gang then pounced on his wife, Ani Mary, and bound and gagged her as well before ransacking the house.
Meanwhile, Umesh tried to free himself. Sensing trouble, one of them tried to plaster Umesh'su00a0 mouth but plastered his nose instead. Umesh died of asphyxiation, police said.
The miscreants demanded that Ani Mary hand over the valuables. Since Mary did not know Kannada, they spoke in broken Hindi, saying "paisa paisa," police said.
The gang took gold chains and other valuables worth Rs 80,000, two mobile phones and Rs 4,000 before they fled the scene.
Mary, who was locked in the room, managed to free herself and rushed to the neighbouring flat for help. With the help of neighbours, they untied Umesh and rushed him to a private hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. An exhausted Mary was later admitted to hospital.
Police suspect the involvement of a local gang.
"Their intention was not to kill but Umesh died of suffocation," they said.
Police suspect the same gang to have been involved in a robbery attempt in Rammurthy Nagar a few days ago.
