The protest is against the criminal case filed against the tehsildar of Telhara taluka in Akola district, over the death of three labourers

Around 70 tehsildars and naib tehsildars in the district stayed away from work yesterday, to register their protest against the criminal case filed against the tehsildar of Telhara taluka in Akola district.

On April 28, three labourers died while illegally excavating for clay in Ghodegaon village of Telhara taluka in the wee hours. According to reports, the concerned police officials held Telhara Tehsildar Sachin Patil responsible for this mishap and filed a criminal case against him under Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian Penal Code.

Outraged by this action of police officials, tehsildars from Amravati abstained from work on April 29. When the police did not take cognisance of this protest, the tehsildars and naib tehsildars across the state decided to launch a fresh protest.

"The deceased labourers were excavating illegally. The police should have considered this before filing a criminal case against Patil," said DS Kumbhar, president of Tehsildar and Naib Tehsildar Association (Pune division).

He demanded that the case be withdrawn, and said that if this was not done, the class III and IV employees would also join the protest and stay away from work.
"We have decided to continue our protest against this injustice, until the police takes back the case filed against Patil. Work has not yet been crippled, but if our entire staff stops working, the governmental work would be affected," said Kumbhar.
