Thane seems to have outdone Mumbai as far as drunk driving cases go. Thane traffic police arrested 157 people for driving under the influence of alcohol on the night of Gatari Amavasya, which fell on August 14 this year. Mumbai cops arrested 52 drivers the same night.
The Thane police conducted two special drives, one on Wednesday and another on Friday, in which they arrested 115 and 157 people respectively. "We had nakabandis at 10 different places in Thane, Kalyan and Dombivali," said Rashmi Karandikar, DCP, Thane Traffic.
The Mumbai police, on the other hand, had arrested 57 drivers on Wednesday and 52 on Friday. "We had been carrying out patrols throughout the week, and ended up booking an average of 35 people a night," said Milind Bharambe, joint commissioner of police, Mumbai Traffic police.
Gatari Amavasya, the last day of the Marathi calendar month Ashad, is the night when fast-observers indulge in merriment before Shravan. It is celebrated with drinking and eating non-vegetarian foods.
