Thane girl is all India ICSE topper; girls outperform boys


Girls have outperformed boys in this year's ICSE Class X and ISC Class XII examinations. The results were announced on Saturday.

In all, 99.15% (72,380) girls and 98.19% (58,070) boys passed the Indian Certificate for Secondary Education (ICSE) exam, while 98.35% (26,057) girls and 96.36% (31,665) boys passed the Indian School Certificate (ISC) examination.

Shalaka Kulkarni of Sulochana Devi Singhania School, Thane, and Madhavi Singh from Carmel School, Dhanbad, scored 98.80% marks (best of 5) and topped the Class X examination. Kulkarni said, "Time management is essential. I was committed to my studies and followed a strict timetable from June 2011. My goal was to score 98 per cent." She added, "A week before the exams, I lost my grandfather but my mother helped me overcome that emotional turmoil. I expected to top my school, but topping in India is a wonderful surprise. I want to pursue engineering from IIT once I complete my ISC from Sulochana Devi Singhania School." This year, 1,32,282 students appeared in the Class X exam, while 59,356 candidates appeared in Class XII exam.
