It is alleged that the Maharashtra CID doesn't enjoy the reputation that UK's Scotland Yard does.
I totally disagree. The CID is an old organisation with a great reputation. If that were not the case, then there

would not beu00a0 so much demand to transfer complicated cases to the CID.u00a0 Every time there is some discontent in the manner of investigation conducted by the police, there is an orchestrated demand to transfer the case to the CID. The kind of requests we receive speaks volumes about our performance, competence and reputation. We handle some of the most challenging cases.u00a0 We handle cases, which no officer in Mumbai is ready to handle.

But even when you compare state CID with the CBI, one finds the latter to be much more proactive.
This is true to some extent. In the CBI, people undertake field operations right from the beginning. That is not the case with the CID. The mindset of the CBI is different from that of the CID. Senior police officers that have been working at executive posts depend on the constabulary for field operations. But when they are recruited to the CID they suddenly find themselves handicapped because all this has to be done by themselves. Besides, there is also a dearth of manpower at the junior level and there is a need for augmenting their mobility by providing them more vehicles.

Do you think certain cases like the Khwaja Yunus case has dented the reputation of CID?
Investigations are still going on in this case. I can't comment on any particular case.

Isn't it a fact that many officers view a CID posting as a sabbatical?
Yes, it is true that some officers at times think that it is a cooling period for them. So they take other academic activities. This is a wrong concept, as working with the CID is demanding. There are also others who think that after coming here they can augment their personal expertise and talent by taking up some course.
I am not against increasing the personal knowledge and expertise after coming here, but the main purpose and objective of the job should not get sidelined.

Is this because there is not much legwork to do in the CID?
No. Working with the CID is demanding. There is a lot to do here if one is proactive.

Any specific case, which the CID has handled that you consider a feather in your cap?
We unearthed the scam of some senior police officers involved in falsely implicating a Mumbai-based builder R R Chaturvedi.

The CID has been handling all complicated IPC cases when the government transfers it to them but not cases related to cyber crime? Are there any plans to handle such cases as well?
We have written to the government that cyber crimes can be transferred to the CID. We now have good expertise in solving such cases.

As a top officer of the CID, there must be tremendous work pressure. Does it affect your family life?

It is the attachment to work, which creates a problem. If one is detached, one cannot be stressed. Otherwise your restlessness will affect your family life.

How CID works
A complaint from a citizen is not accepted by the CID. The state govt or the state DGP hands over investigation of offences already registered at police stations to the CID. At times, courts direct the govt to hand over the case to the CID.
