Festivity turned to nightmare for three youths who had gone to immerse the idol of Goddess Durga in Yamuna when they drowned to death on Thursday afternoon.

The victims were identified as Puran (20), Dilshad Ali (19) and Himmat (21), residents of Sector 16B, Pocket 1, Dwarka, in south-west Delhi. They left their home around 1 pm. While they were trying to immerse the idol, they were swept away with the strong current. Some bystanders witnessed the incident and called the PCR and fire brigade.
According to a fire brigade official, the incident took place around 3:30 pm near the Yamuna Pusta third in Wazirabad area of north Delhi. Immediately, a team of local police and fire brigade officials, along with divers, was sent to the rescue of the trio.
"Six divers were pressed into service. After searching for nearly half an hour, they fished out the boys. They were rushed to a nearby government hospital where they were declared dead on arrival," said the official.u00a0
"The bodies have been handed over to the family members after postmortem," said the official.
