The trio apparently decided to cross the tracks last night after their Bhusaval passenger train halted near Byculla railway station as there was no vacant platform at its final destination Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST), police said.
The deceased - Hussain Abdul Hussain Hawaldar (60), his wife Fatima Hussain (50) and daughter Jahara Hussain (30) - were hit by the local train while they were crossing the tracks near Byculla railway station at around 8.20 PM last evening, police said.
"The family from Banswara had gone to their relative's residence at Vasind in Maharashtra and took a train from there last evening as they had some personal work in Mumbai. The train reached near Byculla station at around 8 PM," a CST railway police station official said.
The family had to go to CST first but they seemed to have changed their plans and decided to alight and cross the tracks at Byculla to visit their lodge, police said after speaking to their relatives.
Police blamed railway authorities for improper management as Bhusaval passenger train generally halts near Byculla for about half-an-hour, prompting the passengers to move out and cross the tracks.
