We noticed the tiny Caf ufffd Rolla Costa while walking down the busy Fergusson College Road, one day. The two-storey caf ufffd with black granite floors has tables and chairs on the first level and an air-conditioned lounge area with couches on the second.
We tried the Veg Pasta-D-Arabita (Rs 60), which was a generous portion of penne tossed in a spicy and tangy tomato sauce with chunks of capsicum, yellow and red peppers. The pasta tasted more Indian than Italian, though.
Next, we sampled the Rolla Costa Special Veg Pizza (Rs 110 for a 7 inch; Rs 190 for a 10 inch), which we presumed is their signature dish. We liked the crispy pizza topped with assorted veggies, including black olives, onions, capsicum, mushrooms, tomatoes, corn and paneer.
True to its Italian-sounding name, Caf ufffd Rolla Costa, dishes out a variety of pastas and pizzas. But they also serve parathas and kathi rolls. 22 year-old co-owner Rahul Kumar Jain explains, "Initially, we wanted to open an Indian joint serving only kathi rolls and parathas. But since Italian food isn't given as much exposure, we decided to include a few Italian dishes on our menu as well."
We tried the Aloo Onion Cheese Garlic Paratha (Rs 70), Chicken Egg Roll (Rs 60) and Crushed Corn Chilli Paneer Sandwich (Rs 50). The parathas are served with a dollop of butter, some pickle, and a serving of raita. We loved the not-too-spicy parathas, which carried the distinct flavour of each ingredient.
The Chicken Egg Roll, which had tiny pieces of chicken fried in a homemade masala and wrapped in an egg roti with mint (pudina) chutney and ketchup was also delicious. The Crushed Corn Chilli Paneer Sandwich is basically a brown bread toasted sandwich with corn, paneer, and green chilllies.
They also serve Jain Pastas, which are made minus onions and garlic. If you don't see a pasta dish you like on the menu, the chef will happily rustle up one for you, according to your taste.
Caf ufffd Rolla Costa is well lit and the music ranges from Trance and Hip-Hop to Retro and Bollywood numbers. This place is a good option for students looking for a quick, inexpensive meal. The food tastes good and the portions are generous.
