Makarand Sathe's Charshe Koti Visarbhole (Four Billion Forgetfuls), written in 1986, is one of the few plays that qualifies as a contemporary classic in Indian theatre.
The play is a fantasy that depicts conditions as they might be in the year 3985 AD. It is simultaneously a piece of science fiction as well as a political satire.
The society of the future, that Sathe constructs, is a bizarre place where life itself has become currency. Workers get paid not in cash but by an addition to their life-span. As the play progresses, a cut-throat rivalry between a big tycoon and a couple of immortal characters from the Indian mythology unfolds. The middle class man is eventually left in the lurch as the biggies battle it out, much like the situation we face today.u00a0
