A girl who displays undying love for her father, an autobiography of a cutesy caramel chocolate, a birthday party in cartoon land, a little girl who likes a little boy who likes his BMX bike, an adventure in Pushkar -- the two-day short film fest organised by Shamiana will put you amidst a whirlwind of emotions, settings and faraway, surrealistic lands, only to bring you back with the exhilaration that comes with seeing 30 films in a span of four hours.

"Since the attention span of people has reduced drastically and people always seem to be on the move, it was natural for the short film genre to become bigger," says Cyrus Dastur who founded Shamiana -- The Short Film Club in June 2008, which has gone on to make it a presence in five cities. "Since this is the first time we are organising a dedicated festival, we have chosen films from all genres, including animated ones, made by directors ranging from debutant amateurs to award-winning professionals."

If you are a wannabe filmmaker, reach the venue by 2.45 pm on Saturday to sign up for a two-day workshop on short filmmaking by Rohan Sabharwal (Rs 750 for students; Rs 1,000 for others). And if donning the director's cap is what you believe is your raison d' tre, Amit Kumar will be conducting a workshop on Direction on Sunday (3 pm to 7 pm; fees: Rs 500 for students, Rs 700 for the rest). Here's a shortcut to a cine-filled weekend!

Learn a lesson from a trash bag

Where The Loft, New Mahalaxmi Silk Mills, Mathuradas Mills Compound, Tulsi Pipe Road, Lower Parel.
Call 30400166

Khalil Chishtee picks up what we and most of the nation regularly dispose: plastic bags. The artist then moulds these used bags into sculptures. While one plastic bag becomes a man standing against the wall, arms outstretched and head drooping in imitation of a crucified martyr, another is a wall-mounted man whose legs seem to have been shredded away.

The Pakistani artist, who shuttles between Lahore and New York, isn't making a clich ufffdd environmental statement. Instead, what he finds interesting is that what we term as 'trash' is actually the least degradable and a horribly permanent material, and will be present for decades to come, forming the archaeology of our very existence.

Through his show, titled Recycled Identities II, the artist seems to be asking some poignant questions: Does durability matter, even if it's just trash? And if something so trashy cannot be replaced, why can't we remain 'human' forever?
