Pranob Mohanty, under whose regime the Lokayukta police cracked several cases and filed 2 FIRs against Yeddy, shunted
In what has proven to be a twist of fate for the Lokayukta police, the Deputy Inspector General of Police (Lokayukta) Pranob Mohanty was unexpectedly transferred on Monday evening. A special position has been created to please the senior officer as he would be taking over as the Joint Commissioner of Police (West Division).
Sources revealed that DIG Dayanand was the frontrunner for the same designation, but the government has operated smoothly post this development and the DIG has now been given the position of Joint Commissioner (East Division).
Big impact
Under Mohanty's regime, the Lokayukta police cracked several important cases and even managed to file two FIRs against former Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa. With this move, Mohanty had managed to overpower even ADGP R K Dutta, who had earlier cited technical reasons for not filing an FIR against Yeddy.
The former CM had initially managed to avoid FIRs being filed against him by the Lokayukta sleuths, eventually transferring Dutta, who was heading the investigations in the case. Meanwhile, even Superintendent of Police Madhukar Shetty, who had been handling the mining case, went on an unannounced study leave leaving sceptics shocked. Sources within the Lokayukta revealed that Mohanty's transfer is unexpected and that he could have continued in the same position for another four and a half months, after which he would be eligible for promotion. The hurried transfer has now led to much speculation within the department.
Sources further claimed that this move by the government is to shun the present Joint Commissioner of Police Alok Kumar, who has time and again managed to irk senior officials in the department and within the ruling party. Both the cases against Yeddyurappa have now been handed over to Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar, who recently replaced Madhukar Shetty. ADGP JV Goankar said the officials are going to investigate both the cases in detail, to corroborate allegations levelled against the former CM and his kin.
