Treatment details for foreign patients will soon be a click away

Following the controversy surrounding the treatment of the late Egyptian national Eman Ahmed Abdulati in the city, the state health department has decided to launch a medical tourism website for foreign patients by the end of next month.

According to a source, the website will provide information about the various medical services available to foreign patients at top hospitals in the state and the charges. This would ease the struggle of foreign patients in Mumbai, said the source.

"Mumbai and Pune have become medical hubs of the country. Considering the high standards of medical treatment provided in the state, many foreign patients flock to these cities. Hence, we decided to launch a website to make information readily available to them. The link of the website can be accessed on the home page of the Maharashtra Health Ministry," said a senior officer from the state health department.

"The work is currently in progress and the website is expected to go live within the next four weeks," added the officer.

The development comes in the light of the ugly spat between Shaimaa Selim, sister of Eman - once the world's heaviest woman who arrived in Mumbai last year for treatment - and bariatric surgeon Dr Muffazal Lakdawala, in April last year. After the incident, the state health department had decided to form new rules for foreign patients and also launch a centralised website, where all the details regarding the services would be provided.
