The trees --subabhul, kashid and peltapram --were planted by the PMC, garden department five years ago and they were almost 20-feet high. The trees were chopped last week next to the Koregaon Park Police Chowky on North Main Road.
Balasaheb Dolas, horticulture inspector, garden department said: "The issue was raised by the local people and we have sent a notice to the concerned company. Under the Tree Act of 1975, this is a cognizable offence and we can take legal action as per the rules," said Dolas.
Raju Sontakke, a local shop owner, who witnessed the incident said: "We tried to stop the people who were cutting the trees, but we were not sure if they had sought permission from the PMC."
Neelesh Dive, a resident, said: "The trees were chopped and it is shocking. Something needs to be done to stop the illegal cutting of trees."
