Scientists excited by possibility of newly discovered lunar tunnels being fit to live in

What's your address on the moon? Some day soon, this may become a question one does not laugh off.

Experts say naming the recently discovered moon tunnels would be like naming a future village or a residential colony on the satellite, since unlike its craters, the tunnels may support human habitation.

A recent space find, these tunnels are said to be conducive to supporting life. Unlike a crater, tunnels are closed and not directly exposed to radiation.

Scientists say these tunnels extend at least 260 feet down and open into an underground tunnel more than 1,200 feet wide. As a result, these could provide shelter against radiation for future colonists.

ISRO's honorary advisor S K Das, in an exclusive chat with MiD DAY said, "With the availability of water in the polar regions that are craters several miles deep with no sunlight at all, one day, man will live on the moon in these tunnels without worrying too much about our basic life support, water."

Das spoke to this reporter at the launch of his new book 'Mission Moon', which was released by Dr K Radhakrishnan, ISRO Chairman on Wednesday. With the NASA Lunar Programme 2018 on full steam, Das said, "It won't be too long before the Americans establish a colony on the moon."
