Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Uma Bharti, who was expelled from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in December 2005 for indiscipline, was re-inducted in the party on Tuesday after almost five and a half years.

The decision to re-induct Uma Bharti was taken just days after the BJP's national executive meeting concluded in Lucknow.

Party sources say Bharti will be assigned the task of reviving the BJP's fortunes in Uttar Pradesh ahead of next year's election.

She was expelled for indiscipline and for defying the BJP's central leadership in December 2005.

She then launched her own party -- the Bharatiya Janshakti Party -which had virtually no impact on voters.

She was upset about being removed as chief minister of Madhya Pradesh and made repeated attempts to challenge the authority of Shivraj Singh Chouhan who was appointed to head the state government at the end of 2005.

She has also served as a union minister in the NDA government.
