Finally, there's some good news for students who have waited for almost a year to do their PhD from the University of Pune (UoP). According to a university circular, the students will now be able to enrol for the doctorate degree. Until now, the UoP was busy tallying the number of seats and research guides available in various departments.
This also brings relief to students who have been waiting for the announcement of entrance examinations for the PhD programme.
Last year, 6,461 students had appeared for the PhD entrance examination of which 4,532 qualified. About 1,600 of these were enrolled for various PhD programmes after individual departments conducted interviews, but rest of the candidates were left in the lurch with no clue about the admission process.
After a wait of many months, when students approached the varsity they were told that UoP was unsure about the number of research guides and seats available for students.
Until a few weeks ago, those students aspiring to do their PhD could only see last year's stale data on the website.
"We are now starting the admission process. Those students who cleared the entrance tests last year and are waiting for admission would only have to appear for interview this year. Besides, those who have cleared national and state eligibility tests qualifications, and those granted junior and senior research fellowships will be given first preference," said W N Gade, director of Board of College and University Development (BCUD).
A circular regarding this had been put up on the UoP's website and the candidates have to apply by March 24.
Once the interviews are conducted and admissions granted, a fresh count of research guides available would be carried out and an announcement would be made about PhD entrance examinations for those waiting to get in.
