Catch an hour and a half tracing the misadventures of two thieves who reach a land of beyond where money is alien

Come Friday, theatre lovers get a chance to witness Our Theatre, a city-based production house, stage a version of Padma Shri awardee playwright Badal Sircar's Beyond the Land of Hattamala. Presented in a multilingual format, the play explores the concept of 'beyond' with the example of money in a story revolving around two thieves.

Kenappa and Becha, the thief duo escape from being caught for their deeds. In the process, they reach the shores of the land of 'beyond', where money does not exist and buying and selling are foreign terms. In their efforts to steal they encounter several adventures and question many concepts and their conscience. The Guide in conversation with director Vivek Vijaykumaran gives you a sneak peek into the play.

Why did you choose this play?
The script was interesting and the process of work required that all of us, delve deep into our honest side to explore and find the beyond within us.

How would you describe the play?
I think, it's a play which with its inherent honesty manages to ask certain necessary questions about living in today's times. We see the play from the perspective of two thieves wanting to steal money all the time, in a land where there is no money. It provides a perfect recipe for a funny dish, which surprises you and questions your taste.

How have you visualized the land of beyond?
We believe that beyond would be a land where people are content and happy. So, exploring the same idea we have tried to create the imaginary keeping it rooted in the reality that we all relate to.

What issues does the play portray?
It does not portray any issue, but I think it manages to raise questions on our societal structures, where money orders almost everything.

What kind of improvisations have you made for the stage?
There have been a lot of improvisations. We have gone further into exploring the concept of beyond as a land and its inhabitants thus resulting in some new scenes and characters. We have kept the story intact though.

Why is the play important for Bangalore audiences?
I think it's a play for any society/community where magic of money calls the shots.

What will the audience take back?
I will be happy if their honesty drives them to think and they take back a few questions.
