Investigating officials at Cottonpet police said that Selva, a resident of Bangi colony, was living with his wife Janaki, his mother Kasturi and his two children Jagadish and Shakuntala. Selva was an alcoholic and would often harass his family for money.

The incident occurred late Sunday night when Selva returned home drunk and started to create a ruckus at home for more money to drink even further. He searched the house for money and when he found the small money box empty, he was livid.

Suspecting his son Jagadish had taken the money, he called out to Jagadish but to no avail, as the 14-year-old was out to play. Furious for not having enough money to support his alcohol, he woke up Jagadish late at night and started thrashing him mercilessly.

Worried for her grandson, Kasturi tried to intervene in the matter but was unsuccessful, as Selva ignored her cries and continued to beat up Jagadish. Unable to take anymore, Kasturi stabbed Selva in the stomach and released Jagadish from his clutches.

Selva fell to the ground bleeding. Meanwhile, Shakuntala and Jagadish brought a grinding stone and dropped it on their father's leg to avenge the beating.

Realising the situation had gone too far, Kasturi along with her daughter-in-law and children escaped from the house leaving Selva crying for help.

"At present, Selva is being treated at Victoria Hospital and is out of any danger. It's sad but since the family members tried to kill him, we have booked a case of attempted murder against them," said an official from the Cottonpet police. The police are on the lookout for the family, as they have fled home.
