The university was forced to take recourse to electronic mail when it learnt that the International Finance paper had made it to students before the examination

Mumbai University officials were forced to dispatch question papers via email to 58 centres at the eleventh hour yesterday, after it was learnt that the originally dispatched International Finance paper (semester VI) for Third Year students of Bachelor of Management Studies (TYBMS) had been leaked. The last minute hiccup delayed the exam at several centres.

The back-up papers were emailed when it was learnt that the originally dispatched paper had been leaked. Having no time to post the backup set of question papers, officials took recourse to electronic mail. University officials confirmed the leak of the TYBMS paper, and said that they had sent the back-up question paper through email to all 58 centres in order to avoid causing a delay in the examination. The exam of TYBMS students was scheduled to be held from 3 pm to 5 pm.

According to officials, news of the TYBMS paper leak was given to the university's Pro-Vice Chancellor Dr Naresh Chandra at 10 am yesterday, and immediately a meeting of officials was called to decide how disaster could be averted. At 2.30 pm, a fresh question paper was emailed to the 58 exam centres. University Registrar Kumar Khaire said that an enquiry will be conducted to trace the source of the paper leak.

Dr Subhas A Deo, director of examination and evaluation, said, "We have three sets of question papers ready for any exam. One of them was sent through email. The university is ready to make use of technology to deal with a time crunch. There were no delays in sending the paper, and examinees at the centres printed copies of the paper."

T Shiware, principal of KPB Hinduja College, said, "Yes, the paper was leaked and the university sent us another question paper through email. It came to us by around 3.15 pm and we had to print them out for the number of students appearing in our college. The exam started a little late because of this, but we gave extra time to students."
