The Union cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, recommended on Wednesday that the 17th Lok Sabha, whose term ends on June 16, be dissolved.
According to sources, with the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the Janata Dal-United (JDU) pledging their support after the Lok Sabha election results 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's swearing-in ceremony and the creation of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) administration are expected to take place on June 8. Both parties are anticipated to present formal letters of support at an alliance conference, reported ANI.
According to the report, the Election Commission of India has announced the Lok Sabha election results 2024 for 542 of the 543 constituencies, with the BJP gaining 240 seats and the Congress 99. This is a decline from the BJP's 303 seats in 2019, and 282 seats in 2014. In contrast, the Congress saw tremendous increase, winning 99 members, up from 52 in 2019 and 44 in 2014.
The INDIA bloc surpassed 230 votes, posing fierce competition and surprising exit poll projections, the report stated.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has won a third term, but the BJP will require the cooperation of other coalition parties, including JD(U) president Nitish Kumar and TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu. Following the counting of votes for Lok Sabha election results 2024, the BJP fell 32 seats shy of the 272 majority level. This is the first time since 2014 that the BJP did not win a majority on its own, the ANI report added.
Per the news agency report, the NDA leaders are slated to meet later today at Prime Minister Modi's house. The opposition INDIA group will also meet today, with Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge inviting alliance leaders to his home. Following the successful Lok Sabha election results 2024, INDIA group leaders will plan their next action.
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Modi thanked the people for their vote, announcing that the BJP-led NDA would establish its third consecutive government. He regarded Lok Sabha election results 2024 as a win for the will of a developed India, 'Sabka Sath Sabka Vikas', as well as people's strong faith in India's Constitution, the report added.
"On this sacred day, it is confirmed that NDA is forming the government for the third time. We are grateful to the people, they reposed full faith in the BJP and NDA. This is the victory of the world's largest democracy, it is a victory of strong faith in India's Constitution, it is the victory of the resolve of Viksit Bharat. It is the victory of 'Sabka Sath Sabka Vikas'," PM Modi said in his address at the BJP headquarters on Tuesday.
