A 25-year-old man from Hingoli district in Maharashtra took his own life on Thursday, leaving behind a note that connected his desperate act to the ongoing Maratha community's demand for reservation in jobs and education, according to a police official.
According to a report in PTI, Krishna Kalyankar hanged himself from a tree on his farm in Akhada Balapur village in the morning hours. Kalyankar had arrived at his farm around 7 am, and authorities were informed of his suicide at 9:30 am.
A suicide note was discovered in Kalyankar's pocket, with the poignant message, "I am killing myself due to Maratha reservation," as revealed by the official. In response to the tragedy, a police team arrived at the scene and subsequently sent the body to a government hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Recent months have witnessed a series of distressing reports concerning members of the Maratha community taking their own lives in various regions of Maharashtra in support of their demand for quotas, the report stated.
In a fresh wave of protest, Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange initiated another hunger strike on Wednesday, seeking reservations for his community in jobs and education under the OBC category. Jarange, aged 40, commenced his indefinite fast in Antarwali Sarati village in Jalna district, as the "deadline" of 40 days he had set for the Maharashtra government to provide reservation for the community came to an end on October 24.
The activist had previously undertaken an indefinite fast at the end of August, which concluded after 17 days when the state government assured an examination of his demand.
Death in Mumbai
In a recent similar incident, a 45-year-old Maratha quota activist allegedly killed himself in Mumbai's Bandra early last Thursday. He left a note behind in which he urged the community members to fight for the cause. Identified as Sunil Kawale, the deceased was a resident of Jalna, and he was found dead near pole number 4 of a flyover between Bandra and Bandra Kurla Complex. Associated with Maratha Kranti Morcha, Kawale worked as a rickshaw driver, stated agency report.
