Three departments of the Haryana's Ashoka University - Economics, English, and Creative Writing - on Wednesday threatened to stop classes until assistant professor Sabyasachi Das is reinstated, Scroll.in reported.
Economist Das resigned last week after his research paper implying that the BJP manipulated results in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls kicked up a political storm. In an open letter, the Department of Economics noted that the "hasty" acceptance of Das's resignation "has deeply ruptured the faith" in the university.
"Unless these questions regarding basic academic freedoms are resolved before the start of the Monsoon 2023 semester, faculty members of the department will find themselves unable to carry forward their teaching obligations... We urge the governing body to address this...no later than August 23," it added.
Meanwhile, another economics faculty member, Professor Pulapre Balakrishnan, has submitted his resignation letter "in solidarity" with Das, according to The Wire. There has been no official announcement as of yet.
