In some instances, the police have used force against protestors. However, the Supreme Court has warned the state against curbing peaceful agitations

The postgraduate trainee was found raped and murdered in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The incident led to several questions over the safety of women at workplace, even in metro cities such as Kolkata

The case is being investigated by CBI. One person has been arrested by Kolkata Police before the case was transferred to the central agency. However, the victim's colleagues have alleged several cover-ups by local police and have cited fears over tampering of evidence

Women across the strata of the society, cutting across professions and age groups, have been participating in the protests

The Kolkata rape-murder case has triggered several protests across the country. In the West Bengal capital, doctors, football fans, lawyers, artistes and common citizens have hit the streets in large numbers since August 9 after the incident sent a shockwave in the country
