Nine years after Nirbhaya: Five rape cases that shook the nation

It has been nine years since the horrific incident where a 22-year-old physiotherapy intern was beaten and gang-raped by six people in a moving bus in Delhi’s Munirka. Although the accused were brought to justice, data on crimes against women in India shows a dismal picture. About 77 rape cases were reported daily in 2020, as per the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, compared to 68 in 2012. Shakti Mills rape case, 2013: On August 22, 2013, barely a year after the Nirbhaya case, a 22-year-old photojournalist was gang-raped by five people, including a juvenile. The incident occurred when she had gone to the deserted Shakti Mills compound, near Mahalaxmi in South Mumbai, with a male colleague on an assignment. The accused had tied up the victim's colleague with belts and raped her. The accused also took photos of the victim during the sexual assault, and threatened to release them to social networks if she reported the incident. File Pic

Badaun gang-rape case, 2014: In May, 2014, two cousins, who were minors from Maurya community went missing from Katra Sadatganj village in UP’s Badaun district. The family members of the girls tried to file a missing report but police allegedly refused to file a complaint. Later, the girls’ bodies were found hanging from a tree. Postmortem report of the girls confirms that they were raped before the murder. Five people, including two policemen are arrested and later released after a CBI investigation concluded that there was no gang rape and the 5 suspects were released. . Unnao rape case, 2017: The case pertains to the rape of a 17-year-old girl on June 4, 2017 in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao. On December 16 2019, former BJP member Kuldeep Singh Sengar was convicted for the rape and was sentenced to life imprisonment. Sengar was also found guilty in the death of the girl's father in judicial custody. File Pic

Kathua rape case, 2018: In January, 2018, an eight-year-old girl was abducted, gangraped and murdered in the Rasana village near Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua. Six out of the total eight accused were convicted. The main accused was identified as Sanji Ram, a priest. Pic/ AFP

Hathras rape case, 2020: On September 14 2020, a 19-year-old woman was gangraped in UP’s Hathras district by four upper caste men. She died two weeks later in a Delhi hospital. The victim's brother claimed that no arrests were made in the first 10 days after the incident took place. After her death, the victim was forcibly cremated by the police without the consent of her family, a claim denied by the police. Pic/ AFP
