On August 2, youth in Dhaka protested against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and demanded her resignation and justice for victims of recent violence. They chanted “we want justice” and waved anti-government banners. The protests began weeks ago over job quota reservations and have escalated into serious violence. At least 20 people were injured when police used rubber bullets and tear gas to control the crowds. The demonstrations have turned deadly, with at least 150 people killed and around 10,000 arrested. The ruling Awami League party’s office was set on fire, and armored vehicles were vandalized. This unrest is the biggest challenge Prime Minister Hasina has faced since winning re-election in January. Watch video for more.
