The death toll due to the deadly Wayanad landslide has risen to 143 as of Wednesday, July 31st. Many people are injured and several are still trapped, and rescue efforts are underway in Wayanad`s Chooralmala. The landslides have caused severe damage, destroying homes, swelling water bodies, and uprooting trees. The villages of Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha are isolated, leaving many people stranded. Reports say that more than 50 bodies were found in the Chaliyar river, several kilometers downstream, and are now being kept at the Government Hospital in Nilambur. Families are struggling to find their loved ones, and the situation is dire. The locals of the tragedy hit area recounted the horror. They said that "We don`t know how many people are buried under mud. It is the first time such an incident has happened here,”. An NDRF commander said that there`s possibility of surge in death toll as it reached 143. Meanwhile, a two-day mourning is being observed in Kerala for those killed in the deadly landslide.
