Drunk couple bury alive woman they knocked down

The couple was intoxicated and returning home from a bar in the eastern city of Cixi on April 30 when the man ran over the woman, state-run Xinhua News Agency reported today.

To avoid rap, the couple lured the woman offering to take her to a hospital, but drove her instead to an isolated spot in the suburbs where they buried her, still alive.

But the law caught up with the couple on May 9 when police arrested them after a waiter, who had witnessed the accident and seen the woman lying bloodied on the ground, informed them.

A media report said the couple told the police that they had buried the woman as she had stopped breathing. But Xinhua quoted the police as saying that they believe she was still alive when buried.

The couple abandoned their car at a construction site. The car was found two days later by construction workers, who alerted the police as they saw that the car was damaged, the Shanghai Daily said.

And days later the workers were shocked to discover the buried body. Forensic tests showed the woman died of asphyxiation.
